This morning I decided to move a lawn chair onto the balcony…
Our Nashville apartment, while cozy and comfortable, is also a bit smaller than we’re used to. And some mornings, you just want to be alone with God.
So when I heard my husband stirring around seven, I suddenly remembered the spiffy collapsible chairs he’d recently bought. I ran down to the garage, lugged one back upstairs, and placed it on the corner of our tiny balcony next to some potted plants. It was navy blue canvas with a fold-out tray and cupholder, and it felt homey and comfortable.
Thus my morning trek began. Though I never left my balcony, I later felt as if I’d been away on a long, satisfying journey – the kind you feel like writing home about. My humble little balcony had been transformed, by a lawn chair and a couple of potted plants, into a garden atrium fit for a queen – a portal into exciting new worlds I’d never even dreamed of.
I thought about one thing, and daydreamed about another. I breathed in the cool morning air and basked in the glory of puffy clouds and clear blue skies. I gazed at the flowers, only inches away, and they nourished my soul with their rich green leaves and bright purple blossoms. The simple white railing framed my view of the outside world, in the way that the lens of a camera frames a photographer’s shot. My focus had shifted. I saw things differently.
Suddenly possibility and adventure came alive to me, and a sense of destiny sent my senses tingling with delight. I found myself pondering new ideas. Reading familiar verses in a new light. Exploring the Bible with a sense of wonder. And suddenly God was as close as my very breath, whispering in my ear as we adventured our way through the day together.
All this from simply moving a chair…
How about you? Could your focus use a little shifting? Has daily life become a little too hum-drum? If so, maybe ask the Lord to help you change your routine – and shift your focus – a bit today.
It could be as simple as having something different for breakfast, driving a different route to work, or having your quiet time in a different spot. Whatever appeals to your sense of adventure will do. So much of daily life is routine and repetitive that our adventurer’s heart gets bored and simply “checks out” on us — unless we mix things up now and then.
Changing even the smallest detail of our routine can reawaken our senses and help us to “pay attention” again. It opens the door for God to shift our focus and refresh our vision of the amazing adventure we’re truly engaged in. The enemy of our souls would love to make us think that nothing special is going on in our lives, when nothing could be further from the truth. Every single day is precious. Every moment unique and full of possibility.
The King of the universe has taken an interest in us! He’s made us in His image and wants us to know Him. There are worlds to explore and people to reach. And He invites us to adventure with Him.
Maybe today is the day to “shift focus” and re-enter the adventure you were born for!
