FRIDAY REFLECTIONS: Finding the Sweet Spot

Join me, if you will, in a little creative visualization.

  • Settling into a shady hammock on a sunny summer day
  • Relaxing into a soothing back-rub that you didn’t have to pay for
  • Savoring the sweetest strawberry of the season

Or how about something a little more active?

  • Hearing the final click of your parachute before jumping
  • Feeling the wind brush your cheeks as you race down a cliff
  • Experiencing the thrill of your life as you embark on the quest you were BORN to accomplish

Maybe you have no idea where this adventure will lead. Maybe you feel a little catch of fear in your throat as you even consider it. But for once, maybe you’re willing to be scared AND MOVE FORWARD ANYWAY.

Because “the quest for which you were born” trumps every other pleasure, enticement, and thrill. Nothing else even comes close. This is the “sweet spot” for which you were born, the place in God’s heart that only you can fill…the place in His kingdom that you alone were designed for.

So maybe today is the day to take a risk. A step of faith forward, big or small, that will set you on the path of discovery. After all, the worst thing that can happen is you could fail — and we’ve all failed plenty of times before, for far less noble reasons. Besides, the only way to cross the finish line is to enter the race. Maybe today is the day to start.

Or maybe you’ve already begun, yet found the going tougher than you expected. Maybe you’ve become discouraged by unexpected obstacles, or distracted by the ho-hum-hum-drum of everyday life. You may be surprised by those obstacles, but God is not. And He is well able to refresh your perspective and navigate you around them or through them, if you give Him half a chance. Maybe today is the day to make a fresh start.

After all, every hero has his setbacks. Every heroine has her moments of doubt. And every great story has its turn — its “sweet spot” if you will — the moment when things go from bleak to breakthrough, from dismal to delight. That is, if you keep reading long enough.Today I pray you’ll do just that…keep reading the story God is writing through YOUR heart and life…and keep participating in the quest He’s laid out for YOU, from the foundation of the world.Because as inspiring as it is to read others’ stories, nothing matches the thrilling sweetness of truly inhabiting our own.  Oh Lord, give us the strength and courage to FULLY LIVE the lives You’ve given us here on earth!AMEN. . .and let’s get moving!
